Brush Backs in Tap Dancing for Beginners

Hi there! My name is Connie Hale. Thanks for joining me here at expertvillage.com. We’re learning to tap dance, and what we’re moving on now is brushback steps or drawbacks, could be called either way. I’m going to go ahead pull my pants up a little bit here so you can see my feet a little better. Drawbacks: first I’m going to demonstrate and then we’ll break it down for you. Let’s go the other way. Alright, let’s break that down for you. Brushback, step, here we go. We brushback with one foot, you drop the heel of the supporting leg, and step it down. Now, you’re weight is on the digging foot here, so brushback with the other. Brush, dig, step, brush, dig, step, other way, brush, dig, step, brush, dig, step, brush, dig, step. Okay, a lot of weight transfer going on here, and it’s a lot of up and down motion with your body. If you can take a look at what my upper body is doing here at this point, it’s bouncing up and down as I go across the floor slowly. Okay, that’s helping it to get those sounds nice and clear. So, it’s brush, drop, and dig, or brush, drop, and step. Again, breaking it down. Brush, drop, step, brush, drop, step, brush, drop, step, brush, drop, step. Notice how when I brush and I drop, that heel is not coming down yet until it’s ready to go. When I land it, it stays in the dig until I brush it. So, that is brushback steps or drawbacks. Now, let’s bring that up to speed. I’m going to come forward a little bit so that I have some distance to go, so you can hear the sound. Here’s the brushback step. And going sideways so you can see feet. Here it goes. 123,123,123,123. Again, if you can’t say you can’t do it. Brush, drop, step. Say it, brush, drop, step, then your feet will be able to do it. Alright, thanks for learning drawbacks.
