The Flap & Slap Move in Tap Dancing
Hi! My name is Connie Hale. Thanks for joining me at expertvillage.com. We’re working on the basic beginning steps for tap dancing. We’re going to move on to what’s called flap. FLAP. Flap is basically a brush tap with your toe. Flap is brush and tap. You kick a piece of a paper away and step on it. That’s brushed tap flap. F-lap, F-lap, F-lap, F-lap. Other foot. F-lap, F-lap, F-lap, F-lap. You can also do it traveling across the floor staying up on your toes, keeping your body slightly leaned to the front to keep your balance. F-lap, F-lap, F-lap, F-lap. The other way. F-lap, F-lap, F-lap, F-lap. There’s always another one called slap. SLAP. Slap is basically where you flat down and apply pressure to it. Again, the flap is simple to the side. Slap, you’re applying pressure on the tap down so you can travel with it. Slap, just think of slapping the floor. Flap is lighter. So you can keep out to the side. If you’re doing flaps to the side, it’s also good to bounce up and down with your supporting leg to get a clearer tap. Notice how I bend down to begin it, straighten up when I brush the tap out. Down, out, down, out. Just a slight bounce, and that helps clean those taps up a little bit. Again, other foot. Again, that’s flap and slap is down brushing onto the floor. Brush freely pushing the feet into the floor. Slap. Alright that’s your flap and slap.
