How to Prepare the Ceiling Fan Wire
Hi! I'm Chad Smith and I'm a State Certified Journeyman wireman; basically an electrician. I'm here today with expertvillage.com and we are mounting a new ceiling fan in this house today. We've already been through some of the steps to shut the power off, make sure it is safe and we just finished removing the old ceiling fan base. Now I want to take a moment to talk about preparing the wire that is existing in the house. Now when you are looking at the wire, this house is 20 to 30 years old and that is going to be most houses that you are dealing with. This plastic jacket kind of gets brittle over time, so I always like to take a step here and make sure that the wire is safe because you don't want to push this new ceiling fan up and have a short. The only short you want is the ones you wear on Saturday to the beach. So just take the black electrical tape which we had talked about earlier today and just run it around the end of the wire that way it kind of locks it in and do that on both wires, the black and the white. That way you kind of have your wires safed off. Now if they are really messed up and squirrelly, just kind of straighten them out a little bit, make them nice and straight so when you go to mount the new base they are nice and easy to work with. Now that our wires are ready to go, our next step is to install the new base. I'm Chad Smith and we're installing a ceiling fan in this house today.
