How to Shut Off the Power to Install a Ceiling Fan
Hi! I'm Chad Smith and I'm a State Certified Journeyman wireman. Basically, I'm an electrician. I'm here with expertvillage.com today. The first step that you are going to want to take when you are doing anything with electrical work is you are going to want to shut the circuit off that you are working on. I'm back here at the side of the house; some of them are on the back of the house and some are on the side but I am here on the side of the house of the main service panel of your house. Now before I open this panel up, I want to make sure I do it slowly because who knows how old this panel is and how long it has been here. Now this is a pretty old panel. This house was built 40's, maybe early 50's so you are going to see a lot of panel similar to this one. You can go through and research and figure out which circuit would be to shut that off but just for safety sake what we are going to do today is we are just going to shut the main breaker off. Now when we shut the main breaker off, that will shut your whole house off so what you are going to want to do, is shut your computer down, your TV down, your video game and anything that is electronic. You are going to want to just shut those off so you don't run the risk of it endangering or blowing up or anything like that. You don't want to blow up your computer to put in a door bell. Now you'll look right here; it says main service disconnect. For safety sake today, we are just going to shut the main off which shuts your whole house off. Now you are going to want to shut your computer and everything and your TV and VCR's down because you don't want them running when you shut this off. So I am just going to shut this off and then we can get started on our project. Now you heard it click. Now remember that click for later on. So now we can safely go inside and do work on our electrical system.
