Hi! I’m David Kaynor for expertvillage.com and I’m going to talk about and play a little bit of music in 6/8 time. We fiddlers often refer to 6/8 time tunes in the Celtic and the American traditions as jigs. And there are basically just 6 rhythmic subdivisions per measure, and the 8th note is the basic note or beat. Six beats in a measure and the 8th note gets one beat, so we’d have let’s see…1 2 3 4 5 6 1 2 3 4 5 6 1 2 3 4 5 6 1 2 3 4 5 6 which is hard to play and say it at the same time. A bowing pattern, when I went down bow for beats 1 and 2, up bow for beat 3, down bow for beats 4 and 5 and up bow for 6 it’s very hard to do that all the way through a tune. But to be able to do it for at least some of the tune is really helpful, so is this kind of rhythm 1 2 3 4 5 6 1 2 3 4 5 6 and it comes out like this…and that tune is hard to play all in that bowing pattern. So now I’m going to use the pattern some of the time and break out of it at other times and play the same tune. The Ten Penny Bit.
