As we have been talking about the mental aspects of the game, we have be talking about why you are at practice. You need to know the strike zone. Now we are going to talk about something you need to do, you know, in the middle of the game. So, you know, you will come out of the dugout. Now you are on deck. The hitter in front of you is on the plate. What do you want to do while you are on deck? Do you want to be sitting here, you know, talking to your friend in the stand, do you want to be talking to your buddies in the dugout? What you really want to be doing is watching the pitcher. Getting his timing. You say, "Okay, here we go, now he is releasing the ball and I am ready to go." Just kind of feeling it out. Getting ready and set saying okay. Boom, just practicing getting used to each individual pitcher because they are all a little bit different. Getting your timing down. What do you also want to be paying attention to while you are on deck? You want to see, does the umpire have a huge zone, you know, or it is big this way, is it a fairly up and down strike zone, is he really tight so that you can let some pitches go? These are all things you need to be observing while you are on deck. You also, while you are on deck, while you are watching the pitcher, look for any kind of tip offs that he might give. When he throws a curve ball, does he drop his glove a little bit? When he throws a slider, does he maybe dig a little bit more? When he throws a fast ball, does his kick his leg up a little bit higher. Different things like that are all things you can observe while you are on deck instead of talking to your buddies in the dugout. Be watching the pitcher and it can give you that little slight advantage that you need to get a hit once you get in the box.
