Hi! I am Mark Middlebrook and I am here in the Paul Marcus Wines Cantina. And, in this segment I am going to talk about Barbaresco, the queen of the Nebbiolo wines from Piemonte in northwest Italy. Barbaresco is a village east of Alba. Kind of southeast of Torino or Turin. And, in the context of wine, it refers to the area around that village and several others that make wines from the Nebbiolo grape variety. And, I have two examples here to kind of talk about Barbaresco and some of the differences among the different styles of wines. Both are from a producer right down in the center of this little town of Barbaresco. And, the producer, the winery is called Produttori del Barbaresco. Which simply means the producers, producers of Barbaresco wine. And, they are a co-op, which means that they have a whole bunch of different members who grow their grapes and then bring them to this common location to have wine made out of them. But, it is a very, very high quality co-op. They make some really excellent, traditional style Barolos, excuse me Barbarescos aged in large wooden casks. This is their so-called Barbaresco normale. Their normal or regular Barbaresco, which is blended from different vineyards that their members have grapes that they harvest from. This, on the other hand, is a single vineyard wine. The particular vineyard is called Asili. One of the famous crews or vineyards of Barbaresco. In Barbaresco, like in Barolo, each vineyard will give a slightly different character to the wine. A little more spiciness. A little more floral component. A little more earthiness. And, part of the fun of drinking these kinds of wines is drinking some of the different vineyards and enjoying those different aromas and those different flavors. Comparing them side by side if you are lucky. Or go there and taste with the producers and so on. These, there are dozens and dozens of very good producers of Barbaresco. I just brought these because they are among my favorites and I had them on hand here in the store. But, I encourage you to try different kinds of Barbaresco. Ask your local wine shop that has a good Italian selection or at Italian restaurant where they know something about their wines to break these out. Have them with some braised meats or a hard cheese or something like that. They are really a wonderful experience both in the aromas and in the flavors.
