How to Prepare Your Pet Ferret for Surgery
Hi! My name is Fran Friedman and I'm with Morning Star Animal Sanctuary and I am going to talk to you about pre-surgery for your ferret on behalf of expertvillage.com. This guy is healthy and he's not going for surgery but if he was, I would want to make sure that he had a good full stomach and that I made sure that his carrier to go to the vet had food and water in it. Also, a nice soft blanket. Before he is going for surgery you want to make sure that you picked a nice vet that knows about ferrets and is going to perform the surgery and knows about the anesthetic. Also sometimes the receptionist is the one that calls and reminds you about surgery and they are trained to give this speech about how you are supposed to not let them have food after 10 and water after 12 midnight. So you know that they are just doing their job and they may not know that ferret's don't fast before surgery. It is very important that they have food all the way going to the vet. It is good if they have eaten before an hour before the surgery but it is definitely better for them because their metabolim is very very fast. So just make sure when the vet calls you and says don't let that ferret eat food after 12 midnight that you just say okay, thanks and make sure your ferret has food.
