Selecting a Veterinarian for Your Pet Ferret
Hi! I'm Fran Friedman with Morning Star Animal Sanctuary and I am here to talk to you about selection of a veterinarian for your ferret on behalf of expertvillage.com. The first thing you have to know is that your vet does see ferrets. Some vets consider them exotic and they will not look at ferrets or treat them. Make sure that your vet is up-to-date with the most current information about ferrets. If you are working with a vet that does not have a lot of ferret savoy, they can always be in contact with the American Ferret Association who would probably in turn get them in touch with Dr. Bruce Williams who is the foremost ferret expert in the United States and we have conversed with him. He will return calls from anyone all over the US about ferrets. We are in Arizona. We use Dr. Svoda from Palm Lane Animal Hospital in Glendale, down in the Phoenix area for anything that is major and delicate on ferrets. We also use Dr. Adrian Mulligan at Camp Verde Veterinary Hospital in Camp Verde. She has done various things such as shots and other things for the ferret. Ferrets do not do well under anesthetic. The vet must know about ferrets. Remember when you are taking your ferret to the vet for surgery and if the person calls you by mistake as they probably would for a dog or a cat and tell you to make sure that your ferret does fast, do not let your ferret fast. They must have food within an hour of surgery before and also right after they should be offered food to get their sugar level up. They do have a fast metabolism and it is very important for them not to fast before surgery so remember that important note.
