Improv Warm-Ups: Family Portrait

This is an Improv exercise, an Improv warm up really called Family Portraits. It's a good warm up for working on character work. And working on stage picture and working on group mind. So it's pretty simple. Basically, you're going to get the group to get together. Often times, they'll put out some chairs or benches. And they're going to be different families, posing for their family portraits. Like, they're with the Sears studio for their, for their Christmas card or something like that. And what you're going to do, is you're going to give them different inspiration points. For the kinds of family that might be getting their family portrait together. And encourage them to create an interesting stage picture. You know, some people seated, some people standing. Some people interacting, some people on the floor. To create something interesting to look at. I even like to bring my camera for this day. And take pictures of this and post them on line. Because it's super fun, the kind of images you get. So I'll say, "o.k., let me see the cheer leader family portrait". Then everybody will get in there and make some crazy you know, big pose. Like that, you know. And once they all get in that. I'll count them in five, four, three, two, one, freeze. Once everybody's in that pose. I'll say, "o.k., relax. Let me see the snobby family portrait". Then you'll have, you know, people doing this kind of thing. You know, or whatever. And then, five, four, three, two, one, freeze. Then I have all kinds, I mean the sleazy family. The super hero family. The wizard family, the shy family. That's always fun for a photo. And you can play with it, as much as you want. And it's a great way to just, you'll get people used to getting one idea for a character. And putting their full body into it. Also paying attention to stage picture. And seeing what other people are doing it. How can you physically compliment that on stage. And they're really fun photos. Good to use, as well. So this is a fun one, to work on characters and physicality. It's called family portrait.
