Moving Desktop Files to Windows XP My Documents

Hi this is Gerard Mainardi showing you how to organize your documents on Microsoft Windows XP. Remember, Microsoft Windows XP is a trade mark of the Microsoft Corporation. And I'm not affiliated with the Microsoft Corporation. Now we've shown you a bunch of things so far. What I'd like to show you is how to take things from your desk top especially because that's where all the files end up. So many people save so many things to their desk top. It creates a lot of clutter. It gets hard to find anything. We're going to move that into 'my documents' folder. I'm also going to show you how to be able to date label things in case you don't know the date. You can do your best detective work to try to find that out. So let's take a look here. Now what we want to do, just like before. Go hit the start button. Go to 'my documents'. Open a 'my documents' folder. Now here you can see a bunch of stuff on your desk top. Really the only thing that you should have on your desk top are various programs that you use a lot. Here are some games I play. Here are some programs that I used to do sound editing. What we want to do, is get this stuff and clean it up so that's the only thing on the desk top. You can see here that I have a bunch of random text files and a couple folders full of pictures that I could probably put elsewhere. For example, Uh, oh! A folder full of RiFs here of some music I've been working on. What we're going to do, go into 'my music' here. Now we can take this RiFs folder, simply grab it. And drag it right down into here. Now it's in the right place. Now I know where to find it along with the rest of my music. We have some text files here. Looks like some lyrics, looks like some other stuff. What we can do, right click. Go to 'new folder'. Why don't we just create a 'lyrics folder'. We'll go into that. We'll drag these lyrics right in here. Now they're exactly where I want them. And I know exactly where to find them. Now the other thing that we want to look at is, take a look here. Go into your documents. Let's go down and say, o.k. 'My pictures', work behind the scenes. Here's a bunch of different camera pictures that I have. Now I don't know the dates that I took these. I'm might be able to see what it is on label. But what if I want to put something like a date on it. Let's take a look. You can see here as before, we have the name, size, type. Now date modified and date created. These are really helpful for us. You can see them right here. Let's have a look. Just taking on 2/6/2008 at 10:00 am. Some of these were taken at 10:01. But you can see that we have the actual date. We can easily label this now. Click on it. We left two to rename. So this is some basement work that we're doing on 2/6/08. Now everything is easily labeled. It's easy to find and it's easy to show people exactly what we're trying to show them at any time.
