So when you're thinking about pain coping techniques, the first thing I want to talk about, is how you actually deal with pain yourself, so let's play a little thing. Imagine that you're on a country road. It's completely deserted, and every single bone in your body is broken. Imagine that you know you're going to be ok. Help is on the way, but it's not there yet, so what are you going to do to deal with the pain? Just take a few minutes. Jot down some things that maybe you would do. Now, think about when you were in pain. Now, some of us have had severe pain. Some of us are lucky, and we haven't, so whatever has been the worst pain that you've ever had. Maybe you were in a car accident. Maybe you had to have surgery. Maybe you have very bad menstrual cramps. Maybe you get migraines. Whatever has been the most pain in your life, I want you to think about that, and I want to think what you did to deal with it, and write those down. These are really important, because these are your instinctual, natural, responses to pain. Now, some of them might not be the best options. They might not want to be what you want to do for birth. Some of them might be that you just took drugs right away, and knocked yourself out, well that might not be how you want to have birth. Maybe you did deep breathing. Maybe you focused on something else. Maybe you tried to be distracted. Whatever you naturally tend to do when you're in pain, is what you're naturally going to do when you're in labor, so just be aware of those, and know that you already have inner resources, and ways to deal with pain, so when you're dealing with pain, you want to know what your inner resources are, and how you already deal with pain.
