Recording Studio Hardware: Becoming a Music Producer
Hi! My name is Larry Hammel, singer, songwriter, engineer and producer of Deep Waves Studio here in New York City and on behalf of Expert Village, I would like to welcome you to how to produce a recording artist. Now that we have chosen a microphone, it is really important to get the next element in the signal path which is the pre-amp. The pre-amp brings up the weak signal in a microphone and brings it up to line level. A pre-amp can impart its character on the vocal as well and it is also criticcal because you want to just gain some character depending on the singer you have, bring out some good stuff and get rid some of the bad stuff basically. The next thing in the signal chain is the compressor. The compressor is used for automated volume changes and dynamic changes within the vocalist's voice. It helps you mix better, it helps the vocalist sit in a track better and it also helps you really get a hot signal to tape or hard drive, whatever you are using. From the analog domain, we now go to the digital domain and we have over here an analog to digital converter which converts the analog signal to the digital 1's and 0's will be storing on our hard drive.
