You can hear them, other people in the room can also hear them. And they hear with stereo sound, left and right, so you get a balanced sound of your mix or your recording. It's necessary when you're going out shopping for monitors to make sure they're compatible with your interface. Since they will be going directly out from the audio, left from right on your interface, into your monitors, it's necessary that everything is compatible.
