Classroom Management: Text-Based Extra Credit

Another option for utilizing the text is assigning extra credit out of the text. Now some of you might not believe in extra credit, some of you might. I do extra credit activities to off set absences towards the end of the semester. Because my attendance policy is so strict, I give the students one opportunity, one extra credit activity that can remove one of their absences. And this is a really great way to utilize the text book. A lot of text books today even have a CD Rom that comes with them. Maybe you give the students an assignment to view several of the clips on the CD Rom and write a journal article about it. Or they need to read a certain chapter and do something with that certain chapter, write a paper about it or give a presentation about it, or teach what they learned. I think it's great to use the text as extra credit material, especially material that maybe you didn't cover in class. But, the thing that you don't want to do is assign an extra credit activity where a student simply has to outline a chapter. They won't get anything out of it. Come up with something more creative than that. A lot of books have case studies. What I want you to do case study number four in chapter seven. And those are really great learning opportunities for students that would be a great extra credit activity.
