Classroom Management: Call Absent Students

Now let's talk about some strategies for dealing with students who do not attend class. Now first of all I've already spoken about attendance policies. Whatever your attendance policy is that is fine. But you will still have students who randomly come and go and who do not have good attendance. Which is essential if you have participation course and you encourage participation in your class which I encourage you to encourage. One of the things that I do and it takes a little bit of time and not that many professors do it but it has been proven to work. Call them up. You've got their cell phone number. You've got their home telephone number. Whatever telephone numbers you have. You will have those on your roster sheet. Call them. Trust me, they will be absolutely floored when professor Goodwin calls to see where they've been. To see what's going on. Sometimes that's all it takes. Hey you noticed that I was missing. Or hey you cared enough to call me to find out why I haven't been in your class. But that's one of the first things that I always do when I have a student that seems to go missing a bit, is I call them.
