Using Round Kicks in Self-Defense for Women
In this segment we are going to go over round kicks. Round kicks can be delivered to the thigh, to the mid-section. Preferably for women, you want to go for the knee. The knee is actually a good, a very soft area for you to deliver, to possibly take down a larger, stronger assailant, so it’s one of the things you want to keep in mind. Also, when Marissa is delivering this knee, keep in mind that her hands are still up, she is breathing on impact and she is also pivoting and rotating her body into this kick. Instead of becoming a vertical kick, it is now becoming more of a horizontal kick coming straight across to the side of the knee. Okay, now going over the round kick nice and slow with Marissa. The round kick is delivered primarily the same in the beginning as the front kick to the groin in the previous segment. Except this time her base foot is actually going to pivot to the outside a little bit so she can actually turn her hip and rotate and make it more a horizontal kick coming straight across. First you will notice—watch the hip. I want you guys to notice that her hip instead of coming forward on the front kick is actually going to turn and rotate, so really what it is going to do is come around and on top over her left side, her left hip. So ready, coming over. You notice that? Right there, just like that. Notice, the important part of that, and what allows that happen is actually the pivoting of her left foot, her base foot. Notice how her heel turns in towards the target allowing her hips to turn and rotate, turning it into a round kick. The soft target area again that I was talking about is the knee. We are not talking about the front of the knee, because it is really not going to do anything there. You want to aim for the side of the knee here. I believe it only takes about 20 pounds of pressure or I think less than that actually, to actually blow out the knee. So Marissa was probably delivering about 200, maybe a little bit over 200 pounds of pressure right there, so she can use a lot less than that to be able to blow out the knee. We are going to go ahead and show you that, real nice and slow. So coming in, real nice and slow Marissa, right to my knee. Ready, coming in with a round kick. Chopping it down right here. This is what I like to call the equalizer for women, because when you can do this, and you deliver it and it works well, then the bigger guy now becomes the smaller guy, where she can actually come in and deliver knees and harder combatives.
