Classroom Management: Textbook Quizzes

Now, let's talk about another area of classroom management that you will most likely have to deal with every semester. That is students who are not reading the textbook. This is a really big issue. I want to talk about textbooks a little bit, in length, during this section, but the first thing I want to tell you is you have to find a way to test the students on the textbook, because the majority of them will not read it. Just given to their own devices they are not going to read the textbook. Textbooks are great supplemental material. Now, you don't want to lecture straight out of the textbook. You want your lectures to be different than your textbook material, but it's important that you test the students on the textbook. However you wish to do it. Whether you wish to do it in a written test, maybe do pop quizzes, maybe you do verbal questioning, but it is essential that you test the students on the text to make sure they're reading it. Because, if they are not in any way held accountable for reading the material they won't do it.
