Classroom Management: Liking & Benefiting

The next thing that you want to do is really important, and it is distinguishing between liking and benefiting. They may not like your course. They may not like you. They may not like the textbook, and that's ok. You don't have to like a subject, or like a textbook, or like a teacher, or like a course, to benefit from it, and so that's what you want to get your students to focus on, is the benefit that they will get. Maybe this will be a boring class for you, or a treacherous class for you, or a difficult class for you, especially when you're talking about speech courses. Students always put those off until the very last. They are dreading them, so talk about and focus on the benefits. You may not like getting up and giving a speech, but let's talk about the benefits that you will get from it, and that's real important to let the students know early on, is to be ok with likability, or lack of likability, but put their focus on benefits.
