Using Palm Heel Strikes in Self-Defense for Women
Keep going, c’mon. Keep going, c’mon. Time. Okay palm heel strike; just another variation of the straight punch. This time we are using the heel of the hand. Maybe for whatever reason you have long fingernails, you can’t clench your fist and make a tight fist, or a hammer fist, or a straight punch, or maybe you just have a nice big diamond ring right here you don’t want to jam in somebody’s face, you are going to use a palm heel strike. These are very devastating, these are very hard, these are bone crushing as well. What you are doing here is you are actually eliminating a joint here; when you are punching with your fist, some of the energy is going to disperse here as you make contact. But here it won’t; all the energy that you drive forward from your hip or your body is going to all come right here, and it’s going to go right into the target that you are making contact with. Notice how Marissa does the same thing. All the same principles here apply. Nice and slow. Her hands stay up. This is just like a straight punch, nothing changes. The only thing that she is doing is she is just making contact with the heel of her hand. Notice how when she drives forward, her hands actually rotate inward. Her thumbs go down on the inside giving you an angle, coming here rather than coming straight forward. You want to get a slight rotation. So coming straight in, and she rotates down and in with both hands as she strikes. Notice how she keeps her shoulders up again, just like if it were straight punches or hammer fists, and her chin is down to protect herself. Also with this palm heel strike, some women have small wrists, and maybe they don’t have enough strength or enough stability in their wrist to make a good solid punch with their fist, so they can go ahead and use a palm heel strike. It does take some time and some training to develop strength and stability in the wrist, so if you needed to use it today or tomorrow, a palm heel strike will probably be better for you if you haven’t thrown a punch before.
