Using a Pottery Wheel: Starting the Opening

On behalf of expertvillage.com, my name is Mark Coy and we've got our piece of clay centered on our vat and everything slicked up and now we are going to open the clay. Again we want to try and keep ourselves locked in and steady so I keep my elbow down and I am going to take my finger and steady it with this hand and I am going to push it right in the middle. If you are centered, your finger doesn't wobble. If you are not centered, your fingers are going all over the place. As you can see, we are centered. Our fingers are nice and steady and I like to measure. What I do is stick the finger in there and I put my thumb down so I can see where my finger is and I come out here and I can kind of see how deep that is. So I can go a little deeper so that I leave a little bit on the bottom so I can put a foot on it later and all that kind of stuff.
