How to Create the Old World Faux Look : Faux Painting Example
There are many different kinds of faux finishes. This particular one, like I said earlier, is what I call old world. And what I want is I’m not going for a total consistency that would be in a tight faux finish. This is more of a loose faux finish, and I’m going to explain that in just a second.
Different kinds of faux finishes give you different kinds of looks. This particular one is what I’m trying to create- is a feeling of the room is older and not so much as- you know when a room gets older or deteriorated over time, hundreds of years old, it doesn’t all deteriorate or become old all at once. So what I’m trying to create is a feeling of old world look. And I can also do- I can go beyond this and add a second color to create that more and some of the darker areas I can make it darker. And I’m going to show you that in just a little bit, how the results come out. And then I can come back and add a crack or two to make this feeling.
But to start with this, I’m going to make a loose faux. And what that means- the difference between a loose faux and a tight faux is I’m going to have it dark in certain areas and I’m going to keep it light in other areas. So, to create this feeling, the whole wall is not going to be the same color- it’s going to have blotches of dark that kind of flow across the wall and then fade out into light. But it’s very important that you just don’t have a blotch, blotch, blotch all over the whole wall. What you want is to have a sort of kind of a flow in the whole room and somehow or another they all connect together- all the dark spots. Almost like a map if you look at a map, the way that it sort of kind of connects together. So you want to create this feeling, but you don’t want polka dots- that’s really kind of very important. Remember that. When you’re applying the paint on the wall, do it in different motions, in different ways. Don’t do it the exact same, don’t do a square. Don’t do a round circle. Make sure that you do it in different directions at all times. You can carry your brush straight down and then carry it over to the next dark spot, and in just a few minutes I’m going to show you how to blend one dark spot to the other that’s going to create that whole feeling I’m talking about.
