Teeth Whitening at the Dentists Office

Hi! I'm Dr. Alida Smisek on behalf of expertvillage.com. I'm here to talk to you about teeth whitening tips and techniques. In this clip, we're going to talk about chair side whitening. If you and your dentist have decided that you're a good candidate for an in office whitening procedure, you would have something similar to this done to your teeth. You would come into the office, be seated into the chair. We would apply some material to isolate your teeth, which means that your lips would be protected, your gums, tongue, and all your oral mucosa are protected from the light and the whitening material. The whitening material would be painted onto you teeth and then a light somewhat like this would be applied over top of your mouth for a 15-minute period of time. The light is a high intensity light, which speeds up the oxidation of the staining procedure. At the conclusion of one application, we would remove the bleaching and then reapply. In a typical procedure, we would do this 3 times. It takes close to an hour and half to have the whole procedure completed. When you leave, you're given whitening trays to use at home as well. Again, as we've discussed, sometimes there are some post operative sensitivity, and usually on the completion of the procedure we would apply a desensitizing agent and give you instructions on how to avoid sensitivity in a short period of time afterwards. It's a very nice procedure to have done because the whitening is quick, you see results as soon as you walk out the office door.
