Felt-Covered Soap on a Rope: Adding Water

Ok the next step in making our felted rope is we want to very carefully add a little bit of hot soapy water in the middle of our piece. So I'm going to add just a drop of dish soap, of dish detergent to my piece. And I'm going to very carefully just add enough water, the hotter the water the faster the felting will go so. Just going to add enough water there to just wet my middle. I don't really want to wet my ends, if they get wet they can dry again, just don't work them, but here in the middle is where I really want to get the felting process to take place. So I'm squishing, I'm also rubbing against my rough surface. I've got to get enough soap and water to get the suds to start going in the middle. And then I'm going to pinch it and squish it in all different directions here in the middle. And remember we had all of our fibers arranged in all different directions so that they can all be tangling around and the ends will be catching through the other pieces. And the other thing that the hot soapy water does is it wets the surface of the fiber and it makes the fiber swell up so that the little scales that are on the surface of the wool fibers can open up and those individual scales can actually catch on the scales of the piece of wool next to it and that's really what makes the felt permanent fabric that you can't get apart again. So once we get, do this for awhile, we'll get to a point where we can pick it up and really start working it harder and getting it fold.
