Landing Area for Golf Chipping Exercises
From here, I'm going to very plainly explain the idea of hitting a target this closer to you and how much easier it is. Now, if I'm going to take this ball and hit towards this pin, it's obviously going to be easier than a pin that's 20 feet, 30 feet further, correct. So I'm going to use that same theory and actually instead of picking out the hole and focusing on this pin. I would rather focus on a target that's even much closer to me. I'm thinking of a spot about halfway in between, this is going to be my landing area. The time in which the ball comes off the ground and then hits the ground, that's my landing area. I pick about a 3 foot circle and just try and hit it. The idea with this is I can actually miss that spot, with about the same skill I can miss that spot much more than I can miss the spot over there with the same amount of skill. So if I screw up this shot here, I'm actually going to end up quiet better than if I was going for the pin. I hit behind it and I miss my spot by about 3 feet. If I were to use the same amount of skill going for the pin, I would probably be about 3 feet short of the cup still. The idea here is you want to be able to hit your bad shots and have them end up better. Now from here I'm going to try and hit that circle, accelerating of course and I miss my 3 feet circle by about 3 feet. Notice I'm still within a gimme range in pretty much any 4 footer out there when I practice and ready to go. Now from here I'm going to try the same thing and I'm actually going to try to go for the cup this time. Instead of going for that 3 foot circle, I'll focus on the cup. I actually only missed my target by about 2 feet okay, maybe a foot really, a foot within that 3 foot circle around that pin there. Notice my ball is 20, 30 feet past it, now as long as I focus on this little spot here closer to me, I should be able to get pretty close to my target every time for a gimme putt and that's what we want here. Of course the acceleration is just as important as ever and chipping almost than anything else.
