How Strut Mounts Cause Tire Blowouts
Hi my name is Nat McCullough on behalf of expertvillage.com. In this clip we are going to talk about one of the consequences of driving on a bad strut mount. As you could see on the back of my GT probe here I have the donut tire on it. Now what has happen is I do the struts my was bad and being a mechanic I got away with it exactly as long as I could until the wheel blew. What had happen is this component here is your strut and I got my finger on it. The mount is located about 8-10 inches directly above my finger and it holds that tire in parallel with the rest of the vehicle so you could see that it is straight up and down. When those mount fail and as you go over bumps the vehicle would actually separate away from the suspension literally come right apart. The wheel would reset itself again pitched at a angle either out or in depending upon the contour of the road. What that does in the angle the we are talking about is camber it is going to create a huge excessive positive camber which is pitched out or negative camber which is pitched in and that would chew right into these eyeball of the tire and believe it or not it doesn't take very long for that tire to blow out. So if you suspect a problem with your strut mount it is best to get the vehicle off the ground and take a look before you go anywhere.
