On behalf of expertvillage.com, my name is Raymond Temeyer with Lost Island Voyages, and we also have with us Valerie Kevorkian from Tarpoon Lagoon Dive Center in Miami Beach. We’re going to talk about snorkeling today and all the opportunities that it provides. One of the most important aspects of snorkeling is staying safe. With that in mind, certain areas that you’ll snorkel in are watched by lifeguards and are designated. You can pretty much just put on your mask defensive snorkel and go out into those areas and be pretty assured that you’re going to be safe. Now, if you’re going to work outside those areas, if you’re snorkeling with a buddy some place other than a designated area, there are certain safety precautions that you want to take. First one, is to maintain the buddy system. That is so important to snorkel with a buddy when you’re off in areas that unsupervised. When you’re doing that, you’re going to want some safety equipment. This is a snorkeling vest that you’re going to want to put on and wear when you’re in unsupervised areas. This safety vest will inflate and keep you afloat. You put it over your head; you put the strap around your waist. This is an inflation device that you can push down on and blow air into. You don’t necessarily have to keep it inflated all the time, but anytime you’re off by yourself or your in unsupervised areas, it may be a good idea to inflate it.
