Types of Fins: Snorkeling Techniques & Tips

On behalf of expertvillage.com, my name is Raymond Temeyer with Lost Island Voyages, and we also have with us Valerie Kevorkian from Tarpoon Lagoon Dive Center in Miami Beach. We’re going to talk about snorkeling today and all the opportunities that it provides. Again, when picking out equipment, it’s best to go to a professional at your local dive store. Your choices are vast and also they recommend the proper fin for whatever application you’re doing in the water. You’ll notice here that I have a couple of fins spread out that are good for snorkeling. One is your basic full foot fin; it encompasses your entire foot when you’re foot is placed into it. It’s got a simple blade to it that will enable you to move through the water. Another choice is something see through. Same type of a fin, full foot fin, full foot pocket, and this time you’ve got a little bit different material on the blade of that fin. If you want to get into a little hit more of a fin, it’s larger, the blade is a little bit stronger, it’s got support rails on the side that enable you to move through the water quite efficiently. A new fin that’s come out is something called a split fin, and that looks like this. It gives you a real natural kick in the water, and even though they’re a little bit more expensive than the other fin choices, they seem to be quite comfortable in the water. This fin is for a professional diver who is going to be doing some intense free diving. I wouldn’t recommend this if you’re a beginning a snorkeler.
