Make a Jeans Tote Bag: Sewing Up Bottom & Making Straps

Now, I have both of my jeans cut and sewed up at the legs, and now we're just going to sew the bottom section. Now it's fine, if the side seams don't end up at the side. The back of the jeans legs are usually larger or longer than the fronts. Just match up the center seam here, and then sew straight across the bottom, so we're going to sew across the bottom. You're going to do this for both sets of jeans, and because this is for a heavy duty tote, I'm going to sew it twice, for extra reinforcement. To make the handles of our tote, I'm going to utilize the leg section that we cut off. Now, I'm going to cut a strip from here. I want to use this heavy seam line as part of my strap, because it's nice and heavy duty, and I'm going to cut my strip about two and a half inches. I've got the pants folded over, so I'm cutting through to it once, a nice triple and a bing about five inches wide, and then we will go to the machine, and sew this strap, and turn it. Ok, now we have our strap sections. You want to fold them in half, with the right sides together. You can put a few pins in to hold them in place, and just sew with a quarter inch seam allowance down the side, and at one end, you can sew it closed, also with a quarter inch seam allowance, and that will help us to turn it, right side out. To turn it right side out, you want to get a pencil, or some other long object, that you can push the fabric, like this. A scissor isn't always the best thing, because it can actually puncture through the fabric, so you have to be careful, but a dowel or a pencil, and just poke it through, until it comes out on the end, and then pull it right side out. You want to take this to the ironing board, and press it so that you'll have a nice, crisp strap, and then just repeat that for the second strap. We'll finish up the straps with a little top stitching. I press them, so they're nice and flat. Now I'm just going to top stitch, with a quarter inch seam allowance, along both sides.
