Make a Jeans Handbag: Cutting Lining for Inside of Bag

Now I'm going to show you how to make a lining for our recycled jeans handbag. I'm using a skirt that I'm recycling for the lining here. Now you can use a piece of fabric also and you want to set it down two layers. Here I've just layed the skirt down and it's folded here on the top. So take your jeans bag and lay it on the doubled up fabric and just kind of squash it down so that you get the full area of the bag, and make sure it's nice and flat like that and place it at least three quarter inches here from the top. So lay it so that the edge of the top of the bag is three quarter inches down from the fabric that you are, you are going to cut out. And I'm going to cut around the bag. I'm using the bag as my pattern and I'll just cut all the way around the bag making sure the bottom piece is flat. And then we'll just sew these together. I'm going to show you how to put a zipper in the top so that we can have a zippered lining for our handbag. Okay, and now we're just going to cut open the top here. Now if you've used a piece of fabric and folded it, this part would be open. But because I used a skirt, it was folded and now I've cut it open. We'll start by installing the zipper on the top and then we'll sew the lining together. Another option for making a lining for a zippered lining for a handbag is to use a dress. We'll recycle an old dress that already has a zipper in it. And what you do is you'll just, you can close the zipper and lay the fabric down, lay the dress down like this. You've got two layers. Make sure it's nice and smooth and flat, placing the zipper at the top. And in the same way we'll put the edge of the bag right up along the zipper and cut along. Now the zipper, if the zipper's too long, which this one is long, first unzip it to, so that the zipper is somewhere in here. And we'll just cut right through the excess zipper. And we can sew that down. You can cut a zipper and sew it down any way you want so you can make any length zipper that you want. And then again, just cut leaving enough seam allowance all the way around. And then I'm cutting through my zipper again over here. We'll just secure that with some stitching.
