This exercise is called the roll up. Now, in Pilates we have what's called a Pilates ring that you can use to assist you in some of the Pilates exercises. Now if you don't have a Pilates ring at home, you can get the next best best thing, and that's in your kitchen, a roll of paper towels. So what you're going to do is you're going to place the paper towels between your hands. Engage your upper body muscles, pressing against the paper towels. And come on down all the way on the floor, arms over head. Pull your shoulder blades back and down, anchor your heels into the floor and your heels are about hip width apart. Inhale as you lift your head and shoulders. Then exhale as you peel up, one vertebra at a time. Keep those heels anchored to the mat, and then stretch forward, inhale, and exhale. Come on down, pull your shoulder blades back and down, and imprint one vertebra at a time into the mat. And again, keep pressing against the roll of paper towels, and that keeps your upper body in perfect alignment. And embrace the stretch forward, as you inhale and then exhale as you roll back down. You can perform that exercise for about ten reps, and you'll really feel it in your abdominal muscles. And that is the roll up.
