The "T" in Squash: 1-step Forehand

O.k, the purpose of this drill is to teach you how to cover a large amount of area with one step. So, if I'm in the middle of the court and my opponent hits a very hard, short ball. I've got to get there, I don't have time to do all the fancy four step, or three step, or two step moves, I've got to just get there in one step. I may not be able to hit the greatest shot in the world, but maybe I can hit a lob or do something, but at least I got it and I've kept it in play. So, I want you to think about this. Here's the front-court, here's the mid-court, and here's the back-court, so I can get to virtually any ball. Now, this is a good drill just to do on your own, so you have to imagine that somebody's just hit a ball, and you see how I just get to that in one step. So, that's the idea that I want you to think about, is let's say I'm at the T and my opponent just crushes a ball across court and it's going right over there. Well, I've got to be able to just lunge right over here and do something with it, alright. So, or I could use my front foot so I'm watching the ball and I see this big cross-court coming so, I just lunge over here and I can maybe hit it to length. So, it's very valuable to be able to just very quickly to use one step and then in the back-court. So, if I don't have time to get to any of the back-court with all the proper movement I want to just be able to lunge and just hit a ball with one step, or even like this, maybe I'll hit a boast. So, you've got to practice this, I want you to go lunge right here, lunge right here, right foot lunge, right foot lunge, and then in the back-court, one step, one step. If you can work on this drill, you'll be able to cover a lot of court quickly and keep the points going and win a lot more of those tough points.
