Rules for Baseball Positions
The next thing we are going to talk about are positions. Behind me over here is first base; second base, we don’t have a base out but the second base is right behind the pitcher’s mound, and then third base over here. And the positions are numbered, so it’s easier for the scorekeepers to keep track of what goes on in a game. The first position, the number one position is going to be the pitcher. The number two position is going to be the catcher. The third position is going to be the first baseman. The fourth position is the second baseman that’s going to play back right between first and second base. The fifth position is going to be your third baseman that plays just off of third base. Your sixth position is going to be the shortstop that plays back in the area behind third base and second base. Your number seven position is going to be your left fielder that plays in the left third of the outfield, over here in this area. Number eight position is going to be directly behind me in the center third of the outfield, your center fielder and the number nine position is going to be the right fielder that plays over in the right third of the outfield. So those are your basic positions. If you hear, I’m sure many of you have heard of 6,4, 3, double play. All they are talking about it’s a ground ball that goes to position number six which is the shortstop; he picks up the ball and throws it to the second baseman who’s covering second and he’s the number four and then the second baseman will throw it to the first baseman which is number three and so that’s why they call it a 6,4,3 double play.
