Mune Tsuki Kotegaeshi: Intermediate Aikido Techniques

Okay we've looked at kotegaeshi before. Now we're going to actually look into it and some principles of motion. I'm going to show you some things that I do that I've picked up along the way. Again, the person comes in with the strike to the stomach and I don't want to be right here because I don't want him to see my lunch. So I do my tenkan to get out of the way. One more time. Turning to the outside. Controlling this wrist here. As I control the wrist you'll see that I've got the grip that I want. The thumb underneath the pinkie between the bones of the hand and my fingers wrapped around the fat part of his hand and the crease of his wrist right here. That puts a wrist lock on him that I want to use to control so he doesn't strike me across the face. Done slowly, tenkan, kotegaeshi. Again, I don't want to leave the person on their back because he can attack me from here, so I control him with the pin that I showed. One more time. Just like this. From here I want to talk about locking the entire body up using this wrist motion. A lot of Aikido styles do kotegaeshi like this. And although it looks pretty like this. I don't really feel that that's a very practical technique. Number one it gives him way too much time to get out of this or to strike me. And I don't want that. What I want to do is control his entire body just by using his hand. So from here I lock the wrist up as I turn to the outside. You'll see that I jam the hand back into here controlling his center. I step forward and take him over. And he'll do a break fall to take the pressure off his wrist. One more time with speed.
