How to Disconnect the Latch Rod Assembly on a Lift Gate

Today, we're changing a rear latch on a 96 Ford Explorer. In this step I'm going to demonstrate the proper service procedure for disconnecting your latch release rod from the latch handle itself. Now, up inside the door, we have this relay rod, it runs all the way out to the latch, and we have to disconnect that from the handle that operates the latch mechanism. Now, what we have up in here is a threaded rod and a small retaining clip with a nut on it. All you need to do is pop the clip off and slide the rod out of the end of the handle. Let me go ahead and demonstrate that for you now. Just like so, and take and rotate that out. Now, as you can see, the end of this rod is threaded, and it is an adjustable point, so make sure not to turn this, otherwise, it will throw off the way your handle operates. Once you have the latch removed from it, you can take and pry up with your screwdriver and pop that rod out. Just like so. You can see right there, the little stud, it slips down into the latch. That is the proper service procedure for disconnecting your release rod from the handle.
