Another way to help your dog learn to come and also provides you a safety when your dog is completely off leash in an unfenced area, which is a common situation in Austin, is to use a remote collar. It is very important to understand that these are used very softly and they are not used as punishment. The way I use it is as a "Hey, look at me, we're going to do something fun." So, when I use it I expect them to look at me and I just tapped her now and all she did was look up. Where this is useful, your dog is running off after a squirrel, and as you see this is one who really likes the word squirrel. So, when she is after the squirrel, say, in Austin at Auditorium Shores, I am still able to have a 400 yard leash. So, I'm able to catch her before she goes over to the street or before she goes too far away. And how I do that is use it to teach her to look at me and to come toward me.
