How to Unbolt Motor Mounts

In this clip, we're going to talk about the proper service procedure for removing and reinstalling a motor mount. In this step, we're going to talk about the proper service procedure for unbolting our motor mount from the motor itself. We have two bolts we're going to deal with. One here and one here. I'm going to start off by undoing this one here first. Takes a 17 millimeter socket. Whenever dealing with these large nuts and bolts, I suggest using a half inch drive or larger ratchet. A three-eighths drive will probably work in the short term, but after repeated use, you may damage your ratchet. Break the bolt loose there. Once you have it broke loose, most of the time they'll spin off by hand. Take off the retaining nut there. This particular vehicle also has a grounding strap from the mount to the body. What that's going to do is ground the engine in another location just to ensure that the engine has good grounding ability. When I remove that upper retaining nut, I expose the grounding cable that is grounded from the engine bracket stud to the frame next to the motor mount. What motor mounts are, a heavy duty piece of steel, a rubber block and another piece of steel. What that mount does is absorb along with holding the engine into position. It absorbs engine torque and vibration with the rubber. Rubber does not conduct electricity at all. It?s one of the best insulations in the known universe. That is why they hooked this ground strap from the stud on the engine side to the body to bypass that rubber. Go ahead and just take some channel locks and wiggle that stud up and out of there. You're going to want to be sure to reconnect that later on. Then go ahead and remove the lower nut under that side there. Lefty-loosey, righty-tighty kind of nut. Once you have it broke free, should be able to undo it just like so. Lefty-loosey, righty-tighty. Take and set that in my magnetic tray and remove the last engine bracket mounting nut. Alright, once we have it broken free, we'll go ahead and finish it off by hand and slip it up into our magnetic tray. That is the proper service procedure for unbolting the engine bracket from the motor mount itself.
