How to Torque Car Tires
Hi! My name is Nate McCullough on behalf of expertvillage.com. In this clip we are going to talk about the proper way to let your vehicle back down after jacking it up and the proper pattern in torquing your vehicle's lug nuts. My preferred tool when I am jacking or letting a vehicle down is going to be the hydraulic floor jack. It's taken to line our jack just about so. What we are aiming for is the vehicle's pinch belt. You are going to want to refer to your owner's manual for the proper jacking location for your particular vehicle. This one happens to be right about here. Once we have it up off of our jack stand, we can flip the release handle and our jack stand will collapse. We are going to take our jack stand out of the way, set it off to the side and we can begin to gently lower the vehicle down. You lower the vehicle with a hydraulic jack stand by loosening this screw here. All right. Go ahead and snug it back up and we will roll our floor jack out of the way. Once you have the vehicle back down on the ground, you are now ready to torque the lug nuts. 4-way is my preferred tool. You may want to use a torque wrench if you are not familiar with this process. What are you shooting for on an aluminum rim is 100 foot pounds on a vehicle that happens to have a steel rim is 80 foot pounds. Otherwise, refer to the vehicle's owner manual for the manufacturer's recommended torque specifications. We are going to torque these lug nuts in a star pattern. I always start at the bottom. What I am going to do is torque this just about as hard as I can pull with one hand. Now I'm experienced technician and I know that is awfully darn close to a 100 foot pounds. The next lug nut we are going to head to is we have choices. It's either this one or this one. What we are trying to do is create a star pattern. We are going to go up here to this one. All right. The next lug nut we are going to go to is this one over here and there's this one over here. The next one is this one up here. All right. That is the proper way to let your vehicle down and to torque your lug nuts.
