Brewpubs Vs Microbreweries

Hi! My name Eddie Leal, I’m the Brew Master here at Steelhead Brewing Company in Irvine, California. On behalf of expertvillage.com we’re going to be talking about the difference between brew pub and a micro or macro brewery, depending on how large they are. The main difference between a brewpub and a micro is basically we serve food on site. There is a restaurant on site here at Steelhead Brewing Company. The brewery is located directly behind the bar, and all are beers are served right at the bar. Compare it to micros the macros, basically all they do is produce beer on site and they don’t serve beer on site. What they do is keg all the beers and ship them out. The major difference also, between micro and brewpub is the amount of beer that we produce also. We’re producing 10-15 barrel batches, which is considerably a lot less than what the micros and macros are brewing. Another difference between brewpubs and the micros is; one, since we are brewing in a lot small scale, we have the ability to be more flexible with our beers and be more creative and artistic with our beer styles. As for an example, some of the beers that we have here like our espresso style, our blonde, our titanium wheat, which is basically not your regular standard heffeweizen and wheat beer, it’s a lot higher starting gravity beer. This wheat beer here is like 7.5 % alcohol, which is usually a lot higher than your average heffeweizen would be, along with many other beers. Another difference between us as brewpub and a micro or macro is that we have the ability to rotate our beers a lot. We’re constantly coming up with different beer styles, rotating, and making new beer recipes; that way our customers always have something new to try. What we like to do is educate them more on the different beers. I particularly like to educate them more on the different beer styles that are out there; like to brew more creative or more complex compared to our micro and macro breweries. So, I would see my customer base as a more beer educated base, more beer educated customer compared to your regular micro/macro drinker.
