In this series of videos we're going to start looking at the fundamental weapons of aikido, the ken forms, the wooden form sword...excuse me, the wooden-sword forms, and the jo staff forms. When we look at the bokken forms, we have to understand that when we do these forms we treat the bokken as if it were a live blade. It is not a weapon in and of itself, while it's true that it is a formidable weapon, it represents the sword. I say that because I see a lot of people training today that treat it as if it were simply a piece of wood. I believe that that takes a great deal away from the sword training. Once again, while this is just simply a wooden sword, we treat it and let it represent the blade, the actual sword that it is supposed to help us understand. Aikido is steeped very deeply in the sword forms, O Sensei was very proficient with a sword as evident in a lot of his footage. So I encourage you that when you do the weapon form, think of it as much more than just a piece of wood in your hands. If that's what you're seeing, that's all it will ever be. Treat it as if it were a live blade and your sword forms will take off.
