Let's take a lesson from nature; let's look at the strong stout tree trunk that holds the tree erect. The front, the back, and the sides are all strong. Just as if you go to a gym and they talk about core exercises in your stomach, you?re back, and your sides of your trunk. Let's compare this to our spine. With movement of the spine, when you lift, pull, push, tug, or turn, sometimes you will bulge your disc in your low back, and it will look similar to this where the nerves exit between the backbones. Just some bouncy putty to illustrate what the disc can look like in your back if you have a bulge disc. When you bend, push and pull, when you have had enough water to drink and you have good supplementation and a really good diet. It makes your disc and all the tissues and ligaments very elastic. If you smoke, if you do not drink enough water, if you are anemic and such, sometimes it will make the tissues brittle so that they rip and tear. If you will notice, inside the canal you can see that there is a hole; this is where your spinal cord goes. And to the side, this is where the nerves exit as they go through. If there is an accident or if your disc bulges, it can bulge to the front, it can bulge to the back, and it can bulge to either side. If it bulges toward the back, it can press on your cord and you have electrical problems with your strength or with your sensation below that level. Sometimes it will pinch the nerves that come out and you may have a one sided problem. Sometimes there may be a time that, that gets better and the other side hurts because the disc can get hydrated and slip to the other side.
