Beekeeping: Parts of an Active Beehive

Here is the colony that had been weaker. So they wont have as many supers on them. Oh, well done girls. They have already added quite a bit of honey to this super and we need to go downstairs and we will see whats happening inside the beehive. Theres a pretty good comb of honey. You will notice they have just started to cap the honey comb. They have just started to put a wax capping over the surface when their full and when we extract the honey we have to cut that wax capping off and then simply spin the honey out. So lets look a little further here and see what we see. There is some nice honey there is probably thirty pounds of honey in that box. I am going to make them upset if I am not careful here. Now to inspect a beehive we pull the cone out by the way that is a plastic one. Kind of unusual but some people are using more plastic cones now a days. We move some combs over. See whats happening here you want to give them some smoke but not to much. If you smoke then too much then they run around and they kind of don't act normal. So you want to be a little not to much smoke. I can certainly see new nectar. You will see brood you see the little white larva there thats the a stage of the brood and then the sealed brood. This brown center is the sealed brood. The while larva is part of the stage and then we will show you even a smaller larva and even eggs. Most of these are worker bees. Here is a drone right here a larger bee is the drone. The worker bees are females. Here this is one of the cones from the inside of the hive you will notice sealed brood. Thats the young bees. You will notice some white larva there just before they seal the brood you can see the white larva there the bee is feeding it actively and then you see all this glistening here. This is new nectar their bringing in just today. Right on the edge this is more sealed brood and this is sealed honey over here. There is a lot of sealed brood there a lot of bees. The hive is looking real good.
