International Communication: Vocal Variations

Now something else I want to caution you about, we're talking a little bit about listening and dealing with different dialects and accents- something that you want to make sure that you do is avoid vocal variations and vocal rhythms. And what I'm talking about is when you are communicating with someone from another culture, don't jump on the rhythm that they are speaking. If they are speaking in a choppy rhythm, you don't start speaking in a choppy rhythm. If they are speaking very flowery, you don't start doing that, and this goes for dialects as well. What I see happening all the time is I'm talking to someone with a British accent, and all of a sudden I'm speaking in a really bad British accent and I don't mean to. You speak like you speak in the rhythm that you speak, and allow the person that you're communicating with to speak the way they speak. The idea and the concept here is not that we copy, but that we try and understand.
