History of Soccer in the United States

Soccer in the U.S. first was introduced in the mid 1800's. In 1959, the NCAA had its first national championship. Soccer really took hold as an immigrance sport in the United States in places like St. Louis, Philadelphia, parts of California, New York and Chicago and it has gained popularity steadily. 1975 saw Pele in the United States known to be the best player the world has ever known and really brought the popularity of the sport up to another level. Now lots of kids who saw him play became players and are now coaches and are now having children who are players. The US National team has had some success in recent decades. In 1994, the US Men's team did very well when the United States hosted the World Cup. In 1999, the women took the game to another level of popularity in the US by winning the World Cup in a shoot out with China that was viewed by a lot of people around the world. Youth soccer is the fastest growing sport in the country. It is the second most popular sport for youth in the United States. Its appeal is obvious in that everyone is moving, everyone is excited and the game is fun. Your job as a coach is to keep it happening, keep it fun, keep it exciting and enjoy the game.
