Kennels & Crates in Dog Training

Kennels or dog crates are an effective tool in not only potty training your dog, but bringing about calm submissive behavior. In the many dogs that I've trained over the many years, I always recommend to customers, whether they have a toy breed or a working herding breed, to begin with your puppy in a kennel or crate. The way you can measure the appropriate size is as a puppy, your dog should have just enough space to get up and do a 360 degree turn. This is not inhumane by any means. Dog's derivatives being a derivative of a wolf, they are born and raised in a wolf den. They know when its time to come out of the den, so they by no means are not in tuned to small spaces. Most metal crates come with dividers that allow you to make the crate smaller to bigger. Also have an estimation of how big your dog is going to get so that you can get the appropriate crate. Many crates, standard size is 28 to 36 inches long, which is considered a large crate, which is sizable for a Golden Retriever, Australian Shepherd or a small Labrador. Also you can look at your crate or kennel as being a babysitter. If you dog is getting into everything in the house, give them a treat, make it a positive experience to go into the kennel, crate or babysitter for a little time out.
