Herbs in Chinese Medicine: Niu Xi

Another exciting herb that we can talk about is Niu xi, but it's important to understand that there's sometimes some misunderstandings with the niu xi. There's actually two different types that are completely different species of plants. The one we've got pictured here is huai niu xi. There's another type that isn't quite as powerful and has a slightly different function called chuan niu xi. So make sure if you're trying to buy some from your local store that you get the right type of niu xi. It's kind of an interesting herb because it's actually translates as ox knees and the way that some ox, or cow, have kind bumpy knees where they, their joint is, this is often times there's little knobs all over this root. So it's kind of fun to try to remember it by the way it translates and what it looks like. We do a lot of that with the Chinese herb names when you look at the actual Chinese translations. So this particular herb we say guides the lower part of the body, in particular the low back and the knees and it's great for pain caused by weakness. So that weak low back, that kind of chronic lumbar pain that's just dull and achy as well as those weak knees that are maybe starting to give out on you as you get a little bit older, it's very helpful. There's some other very specific types of diagnoses that it's very helpful and it's best when it's combined with herbs based on a good Chinese diagnosis.
