Photography: White Cards

In this segment I want to talk about the white card. This is actually something I use on location. You see it folds up pretty nice and then pops out into a relatively big size. If I'm actually on location and happen not to have a soft box with me, I can actually bounce my flash into this and it acts very similar to a soft box. This one actually has a gold side to it so if you want to reflect a little gold back into somebody you can do it that way. But a lot of times what I'll do is if I have a soft box or something set up on one side of a person, I can use this to bounce the light back in from the other side. But it's also really nice, let's say, if you don't have a soft box or something with you, you can use this as your light modifier and bounce your light into it and creates a nice, soft light. You can actually even change the color of it by using the gold. But it's something you just want to play with and see what you like. This is, as you can see, a very expensive modifier, it's just a piece of white foam core, I think I paid about ten or fifteen dollars at a craft store for it. This is actually a nice big white card but you can use them as any size, and the beauty of these is bouncing the light into these acts very much, very similar to a soft box, and produces a really pretty light. The beauty of this also is you can get them pretty much almost anywhere, any arts and crafts store, so if you're on location and you forgot something, you can run out and get one of these. I use these a lot in the studio, these actually can produce some of the prettiest light that I use. This one I actually have set up as a foam "V", so you can see, you can have a little bit more modification, you can kind of adjust the light just a little bit more. And actually I think this is probably the best place to start before you go buying soft boxes, umbrellas, or anything else, this is probably actually a great place to get started. You can actually get really pretty light and a fair amount of control.
