Tips for Establishing Preparation Beats for Orchestra

I've learned some good advice about preparation beats that's really helped me out, and some conductors use a full on measure before they bring the ensemble in, and I have seen that cause problems, especially with younger ensembles, with kids. It's often times confusing, and you may get musicians that come in before you actually intend them to. So a good rule of them, I believe, is to just show the one beat proceeding where you want them to come in. So if you want the ensemble to come in on beat four, you show beat three and they come in on beat four. If you want them to come in on beat three, you show them beat two and they come in on beat three. Another thing is, if you're in a rehearsal setting, some, the conductor can skip ahead you know and start the ensemble in the middle of a piece of music, and in that case you can say one note, one beat, show one beat, and have them come in. So, if you want them to come in on beat three you could say one, two, and then they come in on beat three. I'm going to show, we're going to go over that in the following clips.
