Preparation beats are very important because they show three important ideas. At first they show the temp of the piece. They show the intended dynamic, and they show the articulation style. So first I'm going to show the tempo preparation beat, and we're going to pretend that the pattern is in four. It's always the last beat of the pattern, so if it was in three four it'd be beat three. If it was two four it would be beat two. And that's usually just straight out in front of you, almost always it's just right here. So we're going to do a four four pattern, and I'm going to start with a preparation beat that shows that the piece of music is a fast tempo. Two, three, four, one, two, three, four. So my upbeat has to be just as fast as is, as the pattern that I'm beating. One, two, three, four, one, two, three, four. I'm going to show you a slow preparation beat to show the tempo is slower. One, two, three, four, one, two, three, four. Let me show you that again. Slow preparation beat. One, two, three, four, one, two, three, four.
