Now I'll discuss tuning of a symphonic orchestra. Remember a symphonic orchestra encompasses not just strings but the violins, violas; cello, base; but woodwinds, brass and percussion. When you're tuning a symphonic orchestra the conductor cues the oboist and the oboist plays an A on their instrument. And they do not have to adjust their, usually they do not have to adjust their intonation because a correctly made reed will always play in tune. From that A that the oboe plays the rest of the ensemble tunes to that A. Sometimes the oboist will play one A for the woodwinds and the brass, and one A for the strings.
